Two pink water lily flowers, one open and the other still in bud, float on deep blue water. The round leaves, in turquoise greens, surround the scene and frame the centre. Firm brushstrokes model the petals with white highlights and carmine shadows, and the dark reflection beneath the flowers gives weight to the composition.
