A butterfly with folded wings, seen in profile, rests against a background of green and yellow patches. The wings, in ochres, violets and maroons, show reddish eyespots and a delicate pattern of veins. The watercolour combines free washes in the background with more precise strokes on the insect, which stands out warmly against the paper.
