A steam locomotive advances towards the viewer with its carriages, leaving a great column of black smoke curling over the scene. On the left, a house beside the track among bare trees and a lit lamp, the only warm note. The watercolour, almost monochrome in greys and blacks, conveys a wintry, nostalgic atmosphere.
